Quick comparison of GoPro Hero 3 Black's internal mic vs external mic setup. Sound alternates between the two, starting with the GoPro. Why do I do this? I simply enjoy watching and re-watching my own videos more when they have high quality audio. Purely for my enjoyment! And anyone else who is into that kinda sorta thing.
What you hear with the external mic setup is *exactly* how it sounds on the bike in the helmet.
The GoPro is in a waterproof case with the open back. It is bolted to a chesty mount. This is the best performance-to-wind ratio configuration i've settled on.
External mic setup is a Zoom H5 + AKG-D112 (mk1) microphone with a Zoom "WSU-1" fur-style windscreen. I'm recording in 24-bit, 48khz WAV. Input gain set to approx 4.3 (eyeballed). The mic itself is held in the external netted pocket of my Fox-branded hydration backpack. The mic is pointed as directly at the exhaust as possible, and is between 12-24" away from the muffler opening.
The AKG-D112 is a pro-class kick-drum mic rated at 160dB max SPL - it is uniquely well suited to this kind of acoustic energy.
Audio was imported and slightly enhanced (compressed & amplified) via Audacity, and exported as 24-bit/48khz FLAC.
The external audio (FLAC file) was sync'd with the GoPro audio in Cyberlink PowerDirector 14, based purely on matching up the frame-by-frame audio waveform, using a couple of burly revs as a reference point.
Video was originally shot in 2.7k/30p, and it remained that res through post. Minor video stabilization, clarity and de-fisheye enhancements were applied. Exported in 2.7k/30p h.264 AVC MP4, which was UL'd to YouTube.

I got both expensive items second hand:
$80 - AKG-D112 - Bought this many years back on Craigslist and tried to use XLR-to-3.5mm cable to a Zoom H1, which worked decently but was limited. And I lost that cable...
$220 - Zoom H5 - The right tool for the job, full stop. Picked it up on ebay, just took delivery of it today, hence the video :)
Throw in a 3' XLR cable and round it to about $300 USD if got good [used] deals.
